Newsletter for 2/3 August - Sunday 18(A)

This weekend the prophet Isaiah will tell us: "Listen and your soul shall live." As I prepare for the Sunday Masses I keep thinking of these words and my mind goes back to Pope Benedict's Message to Young People when he was with us in 2010:

I ask you to look into your hearts, each day, to find the source of all true love. Jesus is always there. Quietly waiting for us to be still with him and to hear his voice. Deep within your heart, he is calling you to spend time with him in prayer, but this kind of prayer, real prayer, requires discipline.
It requires time for moments of silence every day. Often it means waiting for the Lord to speak.
Even amidst the business and stress of our daily lives we need to make space for silence, because it is in silence that we find God. And in silence that we discover our true self.

Winifred Joyce Foster RIP

Joyce's funeral on Tuesday was a lovely expression of our faith in the Resurrection, and of our life as a Christian community. The Requiem Mass was an appropriate and prayerful celebration: the buffet afterwards was a relaxed opportunity for meeting and eating together. It was wonderful to see Monsignor Phelan in such good form. Thank you for your involvement in so many ways, and for coming in such good numbers to pray for Joyce's soul
May she rest in peace. Amen

Archbishop Malcolm speaks

On the Solemnity of Ss Peter and Paul, I posted an account of Archbishop Malcolm receiving the Pallium from Pope Francis. A week later, Archbishop Malcolm spoke to his archdiocese about the pallium and reflected on the experiencing of receiving it from the Holy Father. There is much to strengthen each one of us in what he says.  Click here to listen to his talk.
