Newsletter for 20/21 February - Lent 2(C)

Click here to read this weekend's newsletter

Please remember that this Friday, 19th February, is the CAFOD Lent Fast Day. We deny ourself something, and bring the savings (hopefully plus some more) to Church on Sunday. Please use the special envelopes distributed last weekend, and sign the gift aid declaration in you are a taxpayer. During this Jubilee of Mercy it would be wonderful if we were able to raise a record amount in response to the call of Pope Francis to revisit the Works of Mercy. These include feeing the hungry and giving drink to the thirsty.

Once again this year, every £1 you raise for the Lent Appeal will be doubled by the UK government, making every effort worth twice as much for people living in poverty around the world. Can our two parishes make it into four figures between them?

What is the Jubilee of Mercy all about?

Here are some of the images and reflections we used at the Wednesday morning session in the crypt this week:

And here is a reflection on the Parable of the Prodigal Son which was distributed at the meeting.

A reminder of future meetings to reflect on Jubilee of Mercy themes:
Wednesdays at 10.00am in the Crypt:
2 March:  Knowing God’s Mercy
16 March: Showing God’s Mercy

Pastoral Letter for the beginning of Lent

Click here to read the Pastoral Letter from Bishop Patrick, which we hear at all Masses this weekend.

Bishop Patrick makes this call to us all:
So, if you know of people who haven’t been to Church and the Sacrament of Reconciliation for a while, but who might welcome the opportunity to spend time before the Lord in adoration and go to confession, please do let them know about these Lenten opportunities. It would be a wonderful act of mercy in itself if you felt able to offer to accompany them to church, or to meet them there, when adoration and confessions are available. Reassure them that they will be gently guided through the Sacrament of Reconciliation by the priest concerned, and experience only great compassion, understanding and mercy. Because, as Pope Francis constantly reminds priests, they must be authentic signs of God the Father’s mercy, ‘always, everywhere, and in every situation, no matter what’.
Here is the poster for the Deanery Celebration. There will also be a guest priest available for Confessions at OLOL on Sunday, 28th February, after the 4.00pm Stations & Benediction

Newsletter for 13/14 February - Lent 1(C)

Please keep an eye on our special Lent programme. I am hoping there will be good number of people at Stations this Sunday afternoon in Ashby, and that many will come down to the crypt next Wednesday, 17th February, after the 9.30am Mass to have a cuppa and to think a bit more about the Jubilee of Mercy. In preparation for Wednesday's session, I am reading Pope Francis' The Name of God is Mercy. It is an excellent, short and very readable introduction to the Pope's thinking about the Jubilee of Mercy.
